Today we are going to focus on Mastering Our Thoughts:
So I am sitting here trying to center myself so I can drop some wisdom on the blog and the chorus that keeps playing in my head is from an old 1970’s R&B ballad made famous by the Temptations. You may know it: ♪ It’s just my imagination running away with me ♪ If not, check out this timeless song below:
I am a sucker for the Motown Classics and this song will always be timeless. I believe though it speaks of a greater truth that often times we do not like to admit. Let’s take time to ponder the words from the chorus of this famous ballad. How often do we let our thoughts run wild???? Let Me help you out– A HECK OF A LOT! We are guilty of our imagination running away so much further and farther than we desired it to go. Many times it runs in the wrong direction with the stench of negativity oozing as it goes.
A few months ago, I wrote a blog about The Enemy Within highlighting what happens when we allow our minds to wander down the precipice of negativity. We must have a plan for each thought that is conjured up. Here is the reality:
Any thought that is not beneficial to life and godliness that is allowed to percolate in our minds and hearts roots itself as a seed of discord within us. We must become proactive when it comes to mastering what we think because it sets the blueprint for how we live.
Here are the first 5 of 15 practical ways to master what enters your mind:
Determine Your Master – Do the things you own now own you.? Are they what determine your destiny and quality of life? Do they consume your thoughts and have you made idols of them? Determine who you let lead you and then determine who and what must be lead.
Get Out of Debt – Do not let debt be the death of you. A life filled with debt will expend your grey matter, time, resources, and your joy.
Guard Your Heart – Another song comes to mind here — Yes, Backstreet Boys may have been one to say it best – Quit Playing Games With My Heart! Seriously, our heart is vulnerable and we must be ever so careful and critical about what or who enters this valuable space. The persons or things that occupy the space in our hearts also charts our life course.
Become The Hall Monitor of Your Time – A big part of guarding your heart is also guarding your time. Lysa TerKeurst in her most recent book, ‘The Best Yes’, speaks candidly about the way our schedules can run or even ruin us. Is the way you spend your time beneficial – emotionally, financially, spiritually, physically, and relationally.
Go to Bed – A goodnight’s sleep has never hurt anyone. It revitalizes and rejuvenates you for your tasks ahead, but it keeps you from all manner of evil that lurks in the dark hours. Our minds and hearts are most vulnerable in the wee hours of the night/morning and it seems like this is when the freaks and freakish things come alive. You know what I am talking about: The seeded text messages, the late-night rendezvous, the over stimulating – over exposing videos, the profane late-night television, and the negative thoughts that seem to go on overdrive.
I promise you that these simple steps can literally save your life.
